It's Valentine's Day today and there seems to be a lot of pink shirts in the peleton today!
In the morning, we cycle about 15 miles through the beautiful agricultural countryside of Costa Rica. The roads were smooth tarmac and generally flat and the only slight blemish of the morning was a big pineapple lorry that committed two cardinal sins - driving whisker close to all the cyclist, causing much anger and swearing, and also stealing all the pineapples, so our pictures of pineapple plantations just didn't cut it.
Memo, our guide, did go pineapple hunting for us, but it seems like all the pineapples have now been harvested.
After the bike ride, we had quite a long transfer in the bus. From the bus I took many pictures of all the lush tropical countryside and crops (banana trees, coconut trees, papaya, taro, soursop). But unsurprisingly most of the pictures were rubbish.
We stopped at a delightful rustic restaurant, so that we could try a local soup made out of three different types of beef (for flavor, meat and stock) plus lots of local veg (some of which remains unidentified). Only one person was able to finish the whole bowl of soup, and that person was Steve, who has been nicknamed the Biffa! (Waste disposal)
After lunch, I am no longer in the mighty pink peleton. I am well and truly dropped. Stuart and Luis keep me company at the back.
This afternoon I feel like I am cycling through treacle. It is very humid, we probably have a very slight headwind, the incline is probably very slightly uphill (must check strava when I get back) and I am pretty sure that my tyres need pumping up. Whatever the reason, I am very very slow. However, on arrival at the hotel we find that it is right on the beach.
We head straight to the poolside bar for a beer and Stuart sits on a fence rail that collapsed underneath him and he nearly lands in the pond. However, there are several pink ladies on hand to make sure he is OK.
They say that you have to kiss a frog to find your prince, but even though it is Valentine's Day no-one is willing to kiss this frog.
